Mr. Wayne G. Sharpe was born September 22, 1949, to Magdalene Sharpe in Cambridge, Maryland and was raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He departed this life on December 21, 2025 in Selma, AL.
Anyone who knew Wayne, knows how deeply he loved music and radio, passions that brought him great joy throughout his life. He discovered his enthusiasm for radio, at an early age, leading to a distinguished 50-year career in broadcasting. Wayne worked at numerous radio stations across North Carolina, Alabama, and Florida, including WVOE (Chadbourne, NC), WWIL (Wilmington, NC), WZZA (Tuscumbia, AL), WTQX (Selma, AL), WHBB (Selma, AL), WXVI (Montgomery, AL), WQIM (Prattville, AL), WJAM (Selma, AL), and WRNE (Pensacola, FL). Known for his warm voice and engaging spirit, he had a unique gift for connecting with listeners and making each one feel like a friend.
Wayne accepted Christ as his personal savior and served faithfully as a member of Historic Brown Chapel AME Church. Later, he served in ministry alongside his wife, Pastor Joann Sharpe, at Jones Memorial AME Church and Brien Chapel AME Church, before co-founding Hope Community Church Ministries in Selma, Alabama.
He was a devoted husband, father, and family man whose kindness, humor, and integrity touched many lives. He had a genuine love for people, and his loyalty to others is clearly shown through the lives he touched.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Magdalene Sharpe. He is also survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Joann P. Sharpe; daughters, LaTonya Sharpe and Shanae' (Reginald) James; brother-in-law, Levi (Margie) Powell and sister-in-law, Ruth (Sam) Morgan; godchildren, Derick Edwards, Nikita Bolden, and many others; nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends.
Funeral services have been scheduled for Saturday, December 27, 2025 at 12 Noon from the Sandridge Baptist Church with Pastor Willie Johnson, officiating and Rev. Keith Jones, Eulogist. Burial will follow at the Serenity Memorial Gardens with Aubrey Larkin's Lewis Brothers Funeral Home serving with excellence through professional service.
