Walter Gene Chambers was born on May 23, 1946, in Thomaston, Alabama, to the late Walter Chambers Sr. and the late Rosie Lee Chambers. He spent his early childhood in Selma, Alabama, where he was baptized at Mt. Zion Primitive Baptist Church.
As a teenager, Walter left school and began working as a caddy at the Selma Country Club. It was there that he discovered his lifelong passion for golf and formed one of the most meaningful bonds of his life. During those years, he met Henry Pitts, who became his lifelong best friend. Their friendship—rooted in loyalty, respect, and genuine brotherhood—remained a steady and cherished presence throughout Walter’s life.
With dedication and countless hours perfecting his craft, Walter grew into an exceptional golfer. He shared that passion with his brothers, teaching them the fundamentals and opening the door for them to become skilled golfers in adulthood. Later, he passed the same love and wisdom to his grandson Kendarius, teaching him that golf mirrored life itself—requiring patience, precision, and resolve.
While living in Selma, Walter met the love of his life, Orvie Withers. Their bond was deep, unwavering, and full of devotion. After her passing, he honored her memory by naming one of his favorite cars after her. Although Walter and Orvie did not have children together, she lovingly embraced Walter’s children as her own, offering them warmth, acceptance, and unconditional support.
Walter peacefully departed this life on Monday, November 24, 2025.
In remembering Walter, we celebrate a life filled with love, connection, and family. His spirit lives on in the hearts of those he leaves behind.

One of the most cherished chapters of his life was the meaningful time he shared with LaChira Williams. Their bond was filled with warmth, understanding, and countless unforgettable moments. LaChira brought joy, adventure, and comfort into Martin’s life, and together they created memories that will live on in the hearts of all who witnessed their connection. Her care, companionship, and unwavering support brought Walter’s peace and happiness, and for that, the family extends their deepest and most heartfelt gratitude.
A special and heartfelt acknowledgment is extended to Mrs. Rebecca Dunn of Birmingham, Alabama, whose presence in Walter’s life was truly extraordinary. Their friendship began in his early years and grew into a lifelong bond defined by trust, compassion, and unwavering support. Rebecca was not only a dear friend, but a source of strength and encouragement through every stage of Walter’s life. Her kindness, guidance, and steadfast loyalty were blessings he deeply cherished. To Walter, Rebecca was family—someone who walked beside him through joy, hardship, growth, and maturity. Her impact on his life will forever be remembered with gratitude and love.
