It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Matthew Leashore, a beloved father, brother, friend, and dedicated community member, who left us on March 12, 2025, at the age of 71. Matthew was born on September 3, 1953, in Selma, Alabama. His journey from this world to the next reflects the love, resilience, and dedication that defined his character.
Matthew was the cherished son of Mr. Bogart and Mrs. Vashtie Leashore. He is preceded in death by his loving parents, as well as his sister Pheoba Bostick, his brothers Sylvester Hosey and Dr. Bogart Leashore, Jr. Matthew's family was of the utmost importance to him, and he devoted his life to ensuring their happiness and well-being.
He is survived by his devoted children Velberta Leashore, Matthew Soles, and Lavarius (Teresita) James. His grandchildren Aaliyah Brianna Leashore and Sebastain Gonzales McCreary, Jr., and his great-grandson Jessiash Isaiah Leashore. Matthew also leaves behind his brothers Johnnie (Phillis) Leashore and Calvin (Mamie) Leashore, along with his friend Angela R. Lindsey.
Matthew’s journey through life was marked by his commitment to education and service. He graduated from St. Jude High School in the Class of 1970 and continued his studies at Jackson State University. Following his passion for service, he honorably served in the United States Navy. This experience shaped his values and reinforced his work ethic, which he carried into his professional life. After his military service, Matthew dedicated 32 years to the Selma Water Works, where his hard work and commitment did not go unnoticed. His colleagues knew him as a dedicated worker who approached every task with a sense of pride and responsibility.
Matthew was a man of great character, known for his kindness and unwavering love for his family. His laughter, wisdom, and caring nature touched the lives of many who had the privilege of knowing him. He was an anchor in his family's life, always ready with a word of encouragement and a helping hand. His spirit and love will forever remain in the hearts of those he leaves behind.
Funeral services have been scheduled for Saturday, March 22, 2025 at 1:00 PM from the chapel of Aubrey Larkin's Lewis Brothers Funeral Home with Minister Maurice Carter, officiating. Burial will follow in the Serenity Memorial Gardens with Aubrey Larkin’s Lewis Brothers Funeral Home of Selma, AL serving with excellence through professional service. A special thank you to Southern Care Hospice, an organization that provided compassionate care in Matthew's final days.
