Lovie Tolbert Obituary

Lovie M. Tolbert was born on February 6, 1931, in Centerville, Alabama, the third child of Dock Moore and Eva M. Reid, both of whom preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by three sisters—Ollie M. Morrow, Dovie M. Stroud, and Annie C. Menefee—as well as one brother, Johnnie J. Callens, and her devoted and loving son, Stevie Tolbert.

Lovie confessed Christ at an early age and remained a devoted member of Green Street Missionary Baptist Church in Selma, Alabama. She faithfully served as both an usher and a member of the choir, using her gifts to bless others and honor God.

She received her formal education through Selma City Schools before continuing her studies at Selma University and the Good Samaritan School of Nursing. Lovie spent more than 30 years working as a Private Sitter, compassionately caring for others with patience and dignity.

After retirement, Lovie embraced life fully. She enjoyed traveling, tending to her beloved plants, and cooking for family gatherings. Above all, she cherished time with her family—especially her children—and in her later years, she found immeasurable joy in her great-granddaughter, Little Ms. Kelley Rose Rutledge, who brought light and happiness to her days.

She leaves to cherish her memory a loving and devoted family, including her children: James (Juanita) Moore, Martie (Annie) Tolbert, Evette (Frank) Gray, Jr., Patrick (Laquanda) Tolbert, Elizabeth (Randall) Rutledge, and Eric (Carrie) Tolbert. She was blessed with sixteen grandchildren—Gregory, Melvin, Lashonte’, Danyell, James R., James M., Renarda, Shawana, Tiasean, Randall Jr., LaToya, Brittany, Porsha, Patrick Jr., Eric Jr., and Brandon—along with thirty-one great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who loved her dearly, including two special nieces, Valerie (Bobby) Johnson and Lynda Dyer, and Gloria J. Jackson, who was like a daughter to her.

Lovie M. Tolbert leaves behind a lasting impact on those fortunate enough to have crossed paths with her.  She will be remembered for her warm smile, compassionate heart, and unwavering love for her family and friends.  During this difficult time, may we find comfort in the cherished memories we shared with her.  She will forever remain in our hearts, guiding us.
