Hilbert Reese Obituary

Hilbert L. Reese, born January 10, 1947 to the late Mrs. and Mrs. Gus and Mary Reese, departed this life on February 18, 2026, at the age of 79. A man of profound strength, dedication, and unwavering love, Hilbert leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew him.

A proud Vietnam Veteran, Hilbert served his country with honor and distinction. Upon returning home, he dedicated his life to nurturing young minds and hearts as a volunteer football coach at Selma High School, a Little League football coach, and a youth baseball coach. His passion for sports was only surpassed by his commitment to mentoring the next generation, teaching them not just skills in the game but also values of teamwork, perseverance, and respect.

Hilbert’s journey through life was marked by his active participation in pivotal moments of history. As a 1965 Foot Soldier, he courageously walked in the Selma to Montgomery Civil Rights March, including the historic Bloody Sunday, standing steadfast in the fight for equality and justice.

A devout member of Morning Star Baptist Church, Hilbert was a trustee and a faithful servant, always ready to lend a hand in the brotherhood and kitchen committee or wherever else he was needed. His faith was his guiding light, and he shared it generously with those around him.

Educated at Knox Elementary School and R.B. Hudson High School, Hilbert valued learning and personal growth. He carried these principles into every aspect of his life, touching countless lives with his wisdom and kindness.

Hilbert is preceded in death by his beloved parents, Gus and Mary Reese, and cherished brothers, Elbert and Robert Reese. He is survived by his loving wife, Patsy Reese, and siblings Mary (Alphonso) Cook and Gus (Austella) Reese. His memory will also be carried forward by a large blended family who adored him, including Rodney (Courtney) Reese, Tatanisha McGadney, Derrick Murphy, Dionne Reese, D'Juan Reese, Christopher (Lorrenda) Reese, Bill (Brittany) Reese, Payton Reese, Cedric Hunter, Calvin Hunter, Cassandra P. Bailey, Franklyn Bailey, Shawntaya Malone, and Melissa Montgomery. Hilbert also leaves behind loving in-laws Dorothy Reese, Joann (Howard) Walker, John (Shirley) Hunter, and Henry (Angela) Hunter.

Hilbert L. Reese's life was a testament to the power of love, courage, and service. Though he has left this world, his spirit will continue to inspire those fortunate enough to have known him. His legacy of warmth, dedication, and unwavering faith will remain in our hearts forever.
