Herbert "Pot Joe" Blackmon, born March 12, 1942, in Selma, Alabama, peacefully departed this world on April 11, 2025, at the age of 83. Known affectionately as "Pot Joe," he was a beloved husband, brother, step-father, and friend whose legacy is cherished by those who knew him.
Herbert was born in Selma, and he attended Shiloh High School. He dedicated many years of his working life to serving his community before retiring from the City of Selma. A passionate baseball enthusiast, he found joy in the game and carried that love throughout his life.
His faith was central to his life. As a young child, Hebert attended Mt. Olive #1 and later became a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. His spirituality and commitment to his beliefs were admired by all who knew him.
Herbert is preceded in death by his mother, Louisa Struggs Blackmon; father, Jordan Blackmon; father-in-law, Willie Thomas, and siblings, Frederick Blackmon, Jordan Blackmon, Jr., and Louise Blackmon.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Mechelle Blackmon of Selma, AL; his sisters, Amanda Blackmon and Fannie Mae (Ray) Henderson, both of Selma, AL; his brother, Alvin Blackmon of Montgomery, AL; and his stepchildren, Sheila Griffin and Melinda Griffin of Pensacola, FL, and Willie J. Griffin of Savannah, GA; Three aunts: Willsey Smart and Brenda Smart of Mobile, AL and Annie Wilkerson, of Selma, AL He also leaves behind his godchildren, KarHita Brown and Lexionna Williams, along with his sisters-in-law, Alisha (Trevor) Jackson and Linda (Cedric) Stevens, his brother-in-law, Patrick (Lakechia) Thomas, and his mother-in-law, Ruby Thomas. Herbert's extended family includes numerous nieces, nephews, and other beloved relatives.
The family extends a heartfelt thank you to Park Place Nursing Home and Senia Powell of Traditions Health Hospice Care, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and The Women in Charge Club for their compassionate care and support.
Funeral services have been scheduled for Saturday, April 19, 2025 at 12:00PM from the Aubrey Larkin's Lewis Brothers Chapel. Following the service, Poncho will be laid to rest in the New Live Oak Cemetery with Aubrey Larkin's Lewis Brothers Funeral Home of Selma, AL serving with excellence through professional service.
