Hattie Smiley Cherry was the 12th child of 20 children born to the late Mr. Wattie and Carrie Rogers Smiley on March 10, 1937 in Pleasant Hill, Alabama. Sis. Hattie Cherry was preceded in heath by her husband, Markle Cherry, Sr., her parents Wattie and Carrie Rogers Smiley, two of her six sons David Cherry and Gary Cherry, and 16 siblings.
Sis. Cherry met and married Mr. Markle Cherry, Sr. She was the proud mother of six sons teacher them the love of Christ and leading them to the Gospel. She loved the Lord and was a dedicated Christian. She was loved by all who met her.
She was an avid reader and was dedicated to nourishing her plants as longs as she did not encounter a worm.
Sis. Cherry worked for many years in the health care field and cared for families for many years. Her greatest work was introducing as many souls as possible to the Gospel of Christ—The Church of Christ.
She leaves to cherish her memory four sons: Merkle (Anita) Cherry, Jr., of New Jersey, William Allen (Lynetta) Cherry of North Carolina, Donald (Ruby) Cherry and Glenn Cherry of New York. Ten grandchildren; Three sisters; Eloise Smiley Reeves of Selma, AL, Juanita (Elijah) Stafford of Miami, Florida, and Dori Spencer of Chicago, Illinois. Two sister-in-laws; Naomi Smiley of Selma, AL and Johnnie Mae Smiley of Texas and a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services have been scheduled for Thursday, September 18, 2025 at 12Noon from Selma Avenue Church of Christ with Brother Joseph Davis, officiating. Burial will follow in the Lorenzo Harrison Memorial Gardens with Aubrey Larkin's Lewis Brothers Funeral Home serving with excellence through professional service.
