James Arthur Howard was born to the Late Ms. Lillie Howard on September 26, 1945 in Autauga County, Alabama. He confessed Christ at an early age and was baptized at Figtree Baptist Church.  He was a faithful member of Figtree, serving many roles including treasurer, Chairman of the Deacon Board and Sunday School teacher.

James graduated from the Autauga County Training School in 1963 as class salutatorian.  He joined the US Navy on November 7, 1963.  He served his country faithfully and completed two tours in Vietnam.

James graduated from the Alabama State University in 1975 with an accounting degree.  He earned his MBA at Auburn University in 1977.

His professional career flourished as he began his work with the United States Postal Service.  James Howard has the distinction of being named the first black Postmaster for the city of Uniontown, Marion and then Selma, Alabama.  He served as Selma’s Postmaster for thirty four years as well serving in many other leadership and mentorship roles within the USPS organization.

While working for the Post Office, serving his church and raising a family, James was also an instructor at Concordia College, Selma University and Troy State University.

James was married to the love of his life, Mrs. Crystean Howard, for 59 years.

From their union was born the late Elgin Quinn Howard, Dr. Sonja Howard Mack (Labarron), and the late James Rodney (Spoon) Howard.

He leaves to cherish his memories three Grandchildren: Rashaad Clay, Mya Morrow and Jaimee Clay; three Great Grandchildren: Dallas Clay, Cameron Clay and Kelsie Clay; three siblings Columbus Howard, Angela Smith and Lula Walker as well as a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by siblings Sheila Smith, Georgia Burrell, Mae Francis Pickett, Sadie McGhee, Charles Howard and Brady Howard.

James Arthur Howard inspired many, mentored many, loved many and gave selflessly.
