Sister Callie Marie Shaw was born November 26, 1941 to the late Deacon Nathaniel Holmes, Sr. and Deaconess Harriett Marie Holmes. She accepted Christ at an early age and joined Ebenezer Baptist Church under the pastoralship of Reverend A. B. White. Later in life, she met and married Haywood Shaw on June 29, 1961. Four children were born from this union.
Sis. Shaw was later employed with the Dallas County School System as a Secretary/Bookkeeper for over 25 years prior to her retirement. After uniting with Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, Sis. Shaw served faithfully for many years until her health declined. She was a consistent and cheerful giver who believed in sowing financially into the work of the Lord. She faithfully brought her tithes and offerings. When Sis. Shaw could no longer attend in person, she made sure they were sent to the church.
She will be lovingly remembered for the many ways she built up the body of Christ:
She helped organize the Hallelujah Chorus with three other faithful members during the pastorate of Rev. Dr. F. D. Reese, who led Ebenezer for over 50 years.
She served as a devoted Sunday School teacher, sharing the Word with patience and love.
She helped start the church’s presentation of “The Messiah” and sang in the chorus faithfully each season, and even helped sew the skirts for the chorus.
She brought joy to every special occasion and holiday, excitedly decorating the sanctuary to make it beautiful for the Lord.
She served humbly and faithfully as a deaconess, caring for the congregation and supporting the ministry.
Sis. Shaw’s life was a testimony of steadfast faith, generous giving, and willing hands. Her service blessed Ebenezer, and her legacy will continue in the choir she helped birth, the students she taught, the meals she prepared, and the beauty she created for God’s house.
Callie was preceded in death by her husband, Haywood Shaw, Sr.; three siblings: sisters, Betty Ann Sullivan, Gloria Jean Winters, and Dorothy Rebecca Pacheco.
Callie leaves to cherish her memory four children: daughter, Olympia H. Goldsby (Jimmie, deceased); sons: Haywood Shaw, Jr., Alvin C. (Mary) Shaw, Sr., and Vernon Shaw (Glenda); eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; two brothers: Nathaniel Holmes, Jr. and James Ellis, Sr.; one sister: Deloria Jackson; a very special friend: Sis. Alline C. Reese; and a host of other family, relatives and friends.
